Favorite Filet Crochet Patterns
Looking for a crochet technique that’s as beautiful as it is beginner-friendly? Why not try filet crochet?
Filet crochet is super versatile – you can use it in all types of crochet projects, from lightweight lacy shawls to modern geometric garments and home decor pieces.
What is filet crochet?
Filet crochet is an easy technique that creates a mesh-like fabric with open and filled spaces. It’s worked on a grid system, using chains to form the empty squares and double crochets to form the solid squares.
The contrast between the solid and open areas creates gorgeous openwork patterns with lots of detail.
Types of filet crochet projects
Some of the filet crochet patterns that you’ll find in this list include:
- Water bottle holder
- Sweaters & tops
- Scarves
- Shawls
- Ponchos
- Blankets
- Hats
- Bags
- Washcloth
- Bookmark
- Table runner & centerpiece
Best Patterns for Beginners
Start with one of these beginner-friendly patterns if you’re just starting with filet crochet – or with crochet in general.

Supplies You’ll Need
The specific supplies you’ll need are listed in each pattern, but here are the crochet essentials I like to have on hand:
- Yarn.Choose a yarn that suits your project. Lightweight yarns like fingering or lace make gorgeous shawls and scarves. Worsted or aran-weight yarns work well for blankets and sweaters.
- Crochet hook(s).Get the size recommended for your yarn. Make a gauge swatch before starting your project and adjust hook size as needed.
- Other notions, like stitch markers, scissors, a tapestry needle, buttons, etc.
I’ve included suggested yarn weights under each pattern to make shopping easier.
Techniques to Know
Filet uses just two simple stitches – chains and double crochets- so it’s a great choice for crocheters of all skill levels.
The main stitches used in filet crochet are:
- Chain stitch (ch) – Forms the open grid.
- Double crochet (dc) – Fills in the solid squares.
You’ll also need to know:
- How to read crochet patterns
- How to read filet crochet charts
- How to block your finished pieces
Before getting started, read through your pattern thoroughly so that you know what to expect. There’s nothing worse than getting halfway through a project just to realize you don’t know how to work the next step!

Filet Crochet Tips and Tricks
Start small
Start with a small, approachable pattern to practice your new skills before trying something more complex.
After getting your feet wet, take on a larger project to further stretch your skills!
Keep track
Stitch markers are an excellent way to keep track of where you are in a pattern. By using stitch markers, you don’t have to be so focused on counting all the time, and you can relax and enjoy your pattern a lot more!
Check your gauge
If you’re creating a garment you want to fit, it’s important to check your gauge. If your gauge is off, adjust your hook size. Otherwise, you’ll do all that work and end up with something that doesn’t fit.
Block your work
Blocking helps your filet crochet project look its best. It evens out your stitches and helps show off the design details.
To block your work, get it wet, gently squeeze out the water, and lay it flat to dry in its proper shape. Easy!
