Easy & More Advanced Crochet Blankets

Whether you’re a beginner crocheter or a more skilled one, you might enjoy the challenge of crocheting a throw blanket.

For this reason, I thought of sharing a variety of patterns for all skill levels.

But before jumping into the list of free patterns that I picked for you, let’s take a look at some useful things to know about crochet throw blankets!

How big should a crochet throw blanket be?

A throw blanket is about 50″ (127 cm) by 60″ (152 cm).

However, when you crochet your blanket, you don’t need to be exact to the inch. As long as your blanket is about 50″ by 60″, it’s going to be fine as a throw!

How Many Skeins of Yarn Do You Need to Crochet a Throw Blanket?

To crochet a throw blanket, you’ll usually need above 10 skeins of any yarn type you’re using.

After looking at the yardage indicated by several published patterns, I calculated the approximate yardage for throw blankets crocheted with different yarn weights. The results are in the table below!

Yarn WeightApproximate YardageBalls of Yarn
Sport (2, Fine)4000 yds
3658 m
12 balls of KnitPicks Brava Sport (100 g, 340 yds, 311 m per ball) or 28 balls of Scheepjes Stone Washed (50 g, 142 yds, 130 m per ball)
DK (3, Light)3500 yds
3200 m
12 balls of Paintbox Yarns Simply DK (100 g, 302 yds, 276 m per ball)
Aran & Worsted (4, Medium)3000 yds
2926 m
15 balls of Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran (100 g, 201 yds, 184 m per ball)
Bulky (5)1500 yds
1372 m
11 balls of Lion Brand Hue + Me (125 g, 137 yds, 125 m per ball)

Please, keep in mind that these are approximate amounts of yarn and you should always read each pattern carefully to see the exact yardage for the blanket you want to crochet.

28 Crochet Throw Blankets & Afghan – Free Patterns

Here are 28 free crochet patterns for throw blankets and Afghans.

In order to make it easier to find the right pattern for you, I grouped the patterns based on the yarn weight they use:

  • Sport (2, Fine) weight yarn blanket patterns;
  • DK (3, Light) weight yarn blanket patterns;
  • weight yarn blanket patterns;
  • Chunky/Bulky (5) weight yarn blanket patterns.

Crochet Throw Blankets with Sport Weight Yarn

Sport weight yarn is not the most popular yarn for a throw blanket, and if you’re a beginner crocheter, I’d advise you against setting off on such a long journey.

F.A.Q. about crocheted throw blankets

How long does it take to crochet a throw blanket?

Crocheting a throw blanket can take anything from a few days to several weeks. The thinner the yarn you’re using, the longer it will take you to finish your crochet blanket.

So, if you’re looking to crochet a blanket in the least time possible, it’s best to look for a blanket pattern that uses bulky weight yarn.

Can Crochet blankets be washed?

Crochet blankets can definitely be washed. Normally, the yarn label tells you if the yarn can be machine washed, in which case, you can simply place your blanket in a washing machine bag and wash it using the delicate cycle.

If your yarn cannot be washed in the washing machine, you’ll have to wash it by hand. Start by soaking your crocheted blanket in room-temperature water with a little soap and softener. Then, rinse and gently squeeze it to remove the extra water.

Finally, to dry your blanket more quickly, it can be helpful to roll the blanket inside a towel and then hang-dry it.
