9-1-1 Season 7 Episode 3 Review: Capsized (2024)

The thrilling conclusion to Bobby and Athena’s honeymoon disaster has arrived, and it doesn’t disappoint. Between the found family we’ve come to know and love and seeing an old familiar face,9-1-1 Season 7 Episode 3, “Capsized,” demands our attention and pulls at our heartstrings.

Honestly, it’s a strong finish to what could’ve been an overly long 3-part premiere. With this final installment, ABC proves once again that it was the perfect network to rescue this wonderful show.

One thing I felt going into this episode was there needed to be stakes. With an emergency of this magnitude, if everyone made it out alright, it wouldn’t feel realistic or genuine.

I am grateful to say that while the stakes weren’t nearly as high as I would personally want them to be, they were high enough to hit all the right notes.

Bobby Rescue Man Extraordinaire
9-1-1 Season 7 Episode 3 Review: Capsized (1)

From the word go, this episode didn’t hold back, and neither did Captain Bobby Nash. It was his quick thinking that got Norman down when the boat flipped over.

And it was his MacGyvering which allowed the Norman rescue to go off without a hitch. Athena is blown away, telling her husband that Buck will be impressed to hear about his work.

It’s a testament to Bobby’s humility and strength that he responds to such praise with comments like he’d rather it have been Buck who did the maneuver. After all, Bobby is always going to be the one to help when help is needed, but if a younger, more able-bodied person is available, he’s not afraid to let them take over.

That’s not to say Bobby isn’t strong. He just knows his limitations and is very aware of his age.

All that said to point out that Bobby does what is completely necessary during all of the daring rescues because he knows he’s the only one there with the skills to pull it off. He knows exactly how to help the mother caught in the pressure door and, transversely, how to calm down the little boy trapped in his stateroom.

Basically, at the end of the day, if we are ever in a capsized boat or ship of any kind we’d be so lucky to have Bobby Nash in our corner.

The 118 Rides Again
9-1-1 Season 7 Episode 3 Review: Capsized (2)

It might become established during “Capsized” that the 118’s new motto is “Who Cares,” but this team is far from that attitude in its simplest form. This is a team who commandeered a helicopter in order to go looking for Bobby and Athena based on the gut feeling of Hen.

What started during9-1-1 Season 7 Episode 2, “Rock the Boat,” with Hen becoming concerned when she couldn’t reach Athena — more on that bond in a bit — continues during this episode as the rest of the team jumps on board.

It is great to see Tommy again, having not seen him since Season 2 when we had the flashback episodes. Showing that his somewhat resistant attitude toward Hen has changed in the intervening years is wonderful to witness.

Having Tommy be the one to pilot the helicopter the 118 takes out into the storm is further proof that once a member of the 118, always a member of the 118. It’s a bond that lasts a lifetime.

The team showing up to rescue Bobby and Cory just as all hope seems lost is the most9-1-1thing for9-1-1 to do. Truly, audiences were clutching at their chests, terrified Bobby and Cory would drown only to see Buck and Eddie’s faces appear. Iconic.

Hen’s Love For Her Family
9-1-1 Season 7 Episode 3 Review: Capsized (3)

We’ve said before, and it bears repeating that the 118 is the epitome of the found family. This team has walked through fires, tsunamis, and earthquakes together and come out the other side.

It boils down to Hen being very aware of what her best friend is up to at all times and getting concerned with a phone call goes unanswered. Hen and Athena’s friendship has been the backbone of this show for its entire run.

So, for that friendship to be the basis behind the 118 being made aware that Bobby and Athena’s cruise is in distress is one of the strongest plot points this show has ever concocted.

Sure, so much of what Hen manages to do on her own is completely illogical, but it’s her heart and love that shines through. She manages to make things happen just by not taking no for an answer.

Hen is willing to break the law in order to save her best friend. And honestly, I don’t blame her. Everyone deserves a friendship that is on the same level as Hen and Athena.

Stray Thoughts

  • I’m not sad the cruise director died, but I am sad about the engineer. That guy just wanted to get back home to his family.
  • Cory gave me anxiety the whole opening sequence. I’m gonna bet he will never be that tuned out from the world ever again. But also, his family sucks for always forgetting about him.
  • Bobby telling Hen he is proud of her…I’m not crying you are.
