A DIY flower wall is a perfect backdrop for your bed or an elegant addition to an accent wall. For more of an English tea garden vibe, deck out an entire room with DIY flower walls. However you choose to incorporate a flower wall into your space, the piece will instantly add warmth, texture, and color. The best part of a DIY flower wall is that you can customize it however you like—mix and match your favorite blooms or choose ones that complement your existing decor.

This DIY utilizes faux flowers, not real ones, meaning it can last years and you can use any flower, regardless of the season. Unlike a temporary flower wall commonly seen at weddings or other events, you won’t need to take this faux flower wall down anytime soon.

Head to your local craft store, stock up on faux flowers (or make your own DIY paper flowers), and follow this tutorial to make your own DIY flower wall.

How to Make a DIY Flower Wall (3)

  1. Measure Your Space

Determine where you want to place your DIY flower wall and decide on how big you’d like it to be. Measure the length and width of the space with your measuring tape.

  2. Cut Foam to Size

Now that you have the desired dimensions of your DIY flower wall, cut your foam board to size, being careful to make the edges as straight as possible. If your foam board will already fit nicely in the space you want it to, you can skip this step.

  3. Cut Flower Stems

If your faux flowers have wire stems, use your wire cutters to trim them, but not completely. Leave about an inch or less of wire so you can attach the flowers to the board easily.

Not all faux flowers come with stems. You can still work with stemless faux flowers, so don’t worry if yours came without them. Just skip this step if that’s the case.

  4. Place Faux Flowers

Before attaching your flowers to the foam board, arrange them in place. This allows you to create your desired design before committing to a specific arrangement. You can rearrange the flowers until you get the exact look you want.

If you’re using multiple types of flowers, it’s easiest to start by placing the larger ones first. Fill in the empty spots around the large flowers with your smaller ones to fill in the board.

  5. Attach Flowers to Board

Secure your faux flowers onto your foam board by punching a hole in the foam and pushing the stems through. If your faux flowers have strong wire stems, you can simply push the stem through the foam to create the initial hole.

If your faux flowers came without stems, you can attach them to the board with a dab of hot glue. Once the flowers are secure, allow the hot glue to cool and dry for at least 10 minutes before hanging the flower wall up.

Add multiple layers of faux flowers for a lush, full look. You can attach flowers to one another with minimal damage by using a hot glue gun. Just make sure everything is nice and secure before moving forward.

  6. Apply Velcro Strips

To hang your DIY flower board and complete your DIY flower wall, use strong velcro strips. You can also opt to use command hooks or nails, but velcro strips are the easiest way to hang it securely and seamlessly without any hardware showing. Once you hang your board, it will essentially look like it’s floating.

Attach your velcro strips to the back of your foam board vertically. Use at least three strips for a secure hold. Add more depending on how heavy your board is—the more, the better in our opinion.

After you attach the strips, hold the flower board against the wall where you're going to eventually hang it and mark the wall where the strips touch it. Remove the board and place corresponding velcro strips where the pencil marks are so that you can hang the board on them.

  7. Display

Hang your board up so that the velcro strips on the back of the board hook into the strips on the wall. Stand back, admire your work, and make sure everything looks straight and tidy. Make adjustments as necessary and enjoy your beautiful DIY flower wall! These beauties are great budget-friendly alternatives to floral wallpaper.
