What is red, hot and blue potato salad

First off – what IS this salad? If you’re like me, when you first heard the name, you probably thought it was some kind of patriotic salad or that it had blue potatoes – or even blue cheese!

However, it’s really none of those things (though it is great for the Fourth of July!). It is the best potato salad ever – and it’s so simple. It’s a copycat recipe for the restaurant Red, Hot, and Blue’s potato salad!

  • Red potatoes: Red potatoes are a particular type of potatoes known for their prominent red skin and white interior. These potatoes have thin and smooth skin, which is loaded with nutrients. Therefore, you can eat them with their skin on. These potatoes have a firm texture and low starch content. Thus, making them perfect for salads.
  • Eggs: You will need hard-boiled eggs for this salad. Hard-boiled eggs are not just healthy but are rich. The yolk specifically brings in creaminess in the salad.
  • Green onion: You will need the green part of the green onions for this salad. Green stalks add color and bring in a crisp element to the salad.
  • Mayonnaise: Mayonnaise is creamy, rich, and flavorsome. You can either use full fat or light mayonnaise for this recipe. Furthermore, if you are looking for a healthy substitute, use Greek yogurt instead.
  • Celery seed: Celery seeds are aromatic and have an earthy flavor. They bring in a savory flavor to the salad. You can use dill seeds instead of celery seeds as well.
  • Salt: Plain salt is enough to balance out the flavors.

Variations

Red Hot and Blue Potato Salad Recipe (9)

In order for this recipe to stay as close to the original as possible, we do not recommend any adaptations. However, you could add some black pepper for an added kick of spice, bacon bits or imitation bacon bits, or use a different type of potatoes (purple potatoes or blue potatoes might be fun!)

Some people might like to use sour cream instead of mayonnaise – or do half and half. While this recipe really doesn’t call for mustard, mustard seeds would be fun.

If you really wanted to make it “blue” you could add some blue cheese crumbles as well!

When to serve this recipe?

This potato salad is a fantastic addition to meals year-round. It would be great for a Fourth of July celebration, summer BBQ, or church potluck. It’s very easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser.

How to serve this recipe

This potato salad can be served warm or cold – whatever you want! We personally like to eat it cold, so we chill it for a while before serving. However, you can also serve it warm, right after it’s made, that can be delicious as well.

You do want to make sure you don’t let it sit at room temperature for too long, as it does contain mayonnaise. Definitely not a recipe you want to just let sit out in the hot weather!

How to store this recipe for later

If you have any of this recipe leftover (doubtful but possible!), you can store it in an airtight container for a couple of days. If you want to freeze it, you can do so in a freezer-safe container. However, you should make sure you defrost it in the fridge. The texture may still be affected by being frozen, but you will see less loss in the original texture when you slowly defrost it.
