A security guard took a swing at a woman who got aggressive after demanding “reparations” from a supermarket to cover her $1,000 (£800) grocery bill, according to a police report. Karen Ivery, 37, was waiting in line at US retail chain Target when she asked a cashier to call her manager regarding the hefty bill she racked up at the store.

The cashier told the authorities that Ivery kept bringing up reparations during their brief encounter before the manager eventually turned up.

Reparations normally refer to a Government entity or other institution handing money or funding to people of colour who are descendants of slaves or marginalised in a different way.

Ivery reportedly told a police officer she wanted the cashier to get the manager “so we could have a larger conversation about how money works, and how the provision works, and how it’s been working in our community in a very wrong way”.

She added: “This is my Rosa Parks moment.”

According to the police report, Ivery soon became furious and walked “aggressively” toward the manager when they turned up as she continued to demand reparations.

The report alleges: “Ivery kept berating her about reparations and her privileged life.”

That is when Zach Cotter, a loss prevention officer, stepped in. The 28-year-old told Ivery to calm down and leave the store, the report claims.

But the customer erupted in fury and started screaming at the security guard before following him into his office.

Cotter tried to shut the door but Ivery forced her way in, leading the security man to throw a punch at the woman, according to the report.

Ivery fell to the floor after receiving the blow, surveillance footage revealed.

Cotter has maintained that he was acting in self defence and told officers Ivery had “charged” at him.

In bodycam footage from an officer at the scene, Cotter can be heard saying: “I told her she needed to back up or leave. She started charging at me.

“I came all the way back into my office, into an enclosed space, and I hit her in the face. I have it all on video.”

Authorities determined that Ivery was the “aggressor” in this scenario, placing her under arrest after reviewing the store’s CCTV footage. She was later arrested for Menacing and Disorderly Conduct.

She was sentenced to one day in confinement and charged $110 (£90).

The police report said: “Ivery was very argumentative and confrontational about the whole incident. She was confrontational with officers on scene and didn't want to explain her actions that evening."
